Create comfort with art and story design.
“Welcome to the magical Wind Festival”
MRI experiences are difficult for kids. The BC Children’s Hospital was looking for a small team to create immersive art and stories that would involve sick and healing kids and their families from the beginning of their MRI journey through to its completion in their state-of-the-art, new Teck Acute Care Centre in Vancouver.
We worked with the Hospital Care Team to dig into their research on how immersive, friendly, familiar experiences were proven to lower kids' anxiety during an MRI. For each room, we created rich visuals with characters. We also created before-care packages for kids and families to immerse the kids in stories and kid-friendly materials on preparing for an MRI. Kids could get to know the characters with these materials before they “met” these characters on the walls and ceilings of the MRI rooms. Afterward, the kids received a special certificate, giving them a place in the story.
Our role in the MRI-wrapped rooms.
Deanna oversaw the partnership with the hospital team and worked with a small team of artists and designers to create the MRI room and ceiling wrappers and the printed materials for pre-MRI and post-MRI.

Results
The Acute Teck Acute Care Centre at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver received extraordinary publicity for its friendly, art-filled facility. Most importantly, they’ve created a friendly, considered space for kids to heal.
